Ep. 289 – Amy Morin: The Easiest Side Hustle You Can Start Right Now

Amy morin

You may remember Amy, she came on my podcast a few weeks ago. We discussed her book, “13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do.”

I asked her why is it a book about what people DON’T do instead of SHOULD do. It seemed counterintuitive to me.

But her reasoning made sense. The book wasn’t written for other people. It was actually just a letter to herself at first. And then she put it online. And it became viral… that led to a book deal.

The podcast was really popular. But I feel like you didn’t get the full story…

Amy’s not just an author, therapist, social worker/mentally strong person. She’s also an entrepreneur.

She was making money in her sleep…

“I’ve always had some sort of a side hustle usually something fun or strange,” she said.

I knew immediately I needed to have her back on the show. I wanted her to  share this with my listeners. Because these are “choose yourself” ideas. Simple, easy to execute, and anyone can do it.

“I had a friend who had a jewelry store,” Amy said, “so I knew the markup on jewelry was incredible, like 200 hundred or 300 hundred percent.”

And she knew jewelry was fairly inexpensive to ship because it didn’t weigh anything. Over the years she and her husband thought about how they could turn this into something they could monetize. And finally they did it.

I asked so many questions about how she pulled the trigger. And got the courage. I wanted to know how she made this business work. I also gave her ideas about how she could scale.

I really believe this: anyone who listens to this podcast can start doing their own side hustle right now.

“Over time it went from a few dollars to a few hundred and then before I knew it we were up to a few $1,000  dollars a month.”

You could quit your job I told her.

“That was the dream,” she said.

Hmmm, I had a brick-and-mortar shop, with all of the overhead sucking up the profit, although it always made enough net profit to cover basic living expenses. I would love to have a virtual shop, but I am skeptical, knowing people whose attempts at that type of business ended up as non-lucrative hobbies. Due to sites like Etsy, so many people can do that now. It seems futile, like setting up your brick-and-mortar shop on a Main Street with 10,000 nearby competitors.

People who run profitable drop shipping businesses understand who they’re targeting and how to outspend competitors without losing profits. They test a lot of products and ad copy to see what’s selling. They also rotate product lines and market at appropriate times like Amy described. One can also experiment with this type of business very inexpensively. Something for choose yourself folks to consider

I am sorry I have to post this here maybe you will notice, because i tried all other communication but it failed. James Altucher, You are my mentor, but your support system sucks. I subscribed to Altucher’s Income Secret and could not benefit from the programme because no broker will accept African member. I wrote and have asked your support at feedback@chooseyourselffinancial.com to cancel my subscription many times. Nobody reply. My hard earned money was removed yesterday again. Please refund my $500. As much as I like you, you are becoming a liar. You are teaching what you don’t practise. I called your support line also and was answered by machine. I have to post here because none of your other communications work

I think brokers do accept African customers. If they don’t, they should, and this site indicates that they do. All you need is a passport, a foreign tax ID or a visa number, assuming you are not a permanent resident or a citizen of the US.

I do not know. I cannot afford to trade, but from reading his articles,I think James’s point is that you can bypass the middle men, like brokers, and their fees, trading stocks yourself by using his methods. Maybe, you have to insert your information at some point in the process to trade without using a broker. I am not sure, but that broker site indicates that it is needed, probably for tax purposes. The tax man is annoyingly unavoidable, regardless of the country.

      Good luck with your trading.

The same thing happened to me. They sell you products that half the time you aren’t even eligible for (ie. you may in the wrong country or you need a minimum amount of income to get started) but it never says that on the sales page, and they take your money anyway. The financial company he’s linked with are really dodgy with very bad customer support and spammy emails. Just do a google search in the forums to see all the many complaints lodged about Choose Yourself Financial.
