What Do You Do When You Find a Dead Body?

Google has stopped using GPAs to evaluate job candidates.

My 11 year old just told me, “Grade point averages don’t count until 6th grade.”

I haven’t yet told her the good news about Google. That she NEVER has to worry about GPAs.

My 11 year old told me, “you can be in a ditch until fifth grade and it doesn’t matter.”

Who tells her stuff like this?

I can picture a teacher saying, “Mollie, you might as well be in a big ditch right now. You and all the other Jews. Nobody gives a flying.”

I’m afraid I get disappointed in her when she gets good grades.

I want her to know I’m proud of her but my first reaction is: this just tells me you won’t know how to react when times are hard.

She doesn’t know what that means. What does “times are hard” mean?

Like when you’re on the floor and nothing is working out and someone is cheating on you and the darkness has knifed open all of your light.

Like when you have to say good-bye to someone you love.

Or when you lose your mind because your boss calls you on a Friday and says “we have to talk” but now it’s 5:01 and you know you will be in chains of anguished anticipation until Monday morning.

Or when you are constantly thinking of your debts and all night long you add up numbers on scraps of paper that mean nothing in the morning.

Or when you want to kill yourself but you’re afraid it will hurt or you’re afraid your little baby will find the body.

I know too many people who have found the body. My uncle in a bathtub with the bag over his head and his wrists slit.

A+

Here’s some things that suck and try to trap you into a jail cell life:

college, owning a home, having a job, dealing with death, failing at a business, failing at marriage, going to weddings across country.

None of these things are taught in school. What do you do when a family member says, “I never want to speak to you again for the rest of my life?”

Is this taught in school? Will Mollie ever say that to me? This has been said to me three times now by family members. There’s no test for that.

An “A+” is not a good or bad thing. It’s a no-thing.

The reason Google doesn’t value GPAs is not because it’s better to get an F.

It’s because a candle is brightest when it’s on fire and burns into the table, leaving a permanent dark stain.

If you don’t know how to handle the fire, you’ll never light up the room so everyone else can see.
